Watching too many Sci-fi movies may have led movie lovers to believe that powerful AI-powered robots are in the making. They could take over the world and human race as a whole anytime. You couldn’t be more wrong about something than this assumption because the reality about General AI and Narrow AI tend to differ from what films project.

Artificial Intelligence is still an elusive concept for human beings and even great inventors. As humans, we are well aware of how our brain works; creativity and logical sense are naturally instilled in every individual. A machine, however, perceives the world differently and teaching computers or robots to use AI to make decisions is still a far cry from being implemented in mass numbers.

Trying to find a direct answer for this highly convoluting and broad subject is difficult. For the simple minds, Artificial Intelligence can be defined as any kind of thinking power exhibited by non-living things aka machines. Just don’t imagine R2D2 from Star Wars helping Jedis escape in a space pod because AI is nowhere close to what we imagine it to be.

While the definition claims AI as an attribute exhibited by robots, it doesn’t necessarily require a physical presence to make use of intelligence. Your Facebook app and Google search engine are powered by intelligence allowing them to predict what you are looking for. It helps you find search results in seconds and recommends content based on your taste. Similarly, robots are being used in the manufacturing plant to use repetitive tasks without a software program guiding all its moves.

Artificial Narrow Intelligence – Human Race’s Biggest Achievement Yet

With several years of hard work, brilliant scientists contributing to making AI viable and development in technology, artificial narrow intelligence has been achieved by humans at the highest possible level. The word ‘Narrow’ describes the true extent of this discovery. Be it a machine or an app powered by narrow intelligence, they can only perform one task at a time.

A good example is Google search results and self-driving cars. The website still requires you to type in a keyword and it will search millions of possibilities in milliseconds to provide relevant results. A self-driving car requires a person to be seated and to make timely decisions but it has the capability to drive on a straight road without any complex obstacles to navigate.

Artificial General Intelligence

It’s a mystery why scientists would call it general intelligence! The term artificial general intelligence pertains to humans and the powerful attributes of a human brain. You can pick even the dumbest person on the planet and his brain power would still be higher than a supercomputer when it comes to making decisions based on complex algorithms.

A computer can be programmed to take multiple factors into account when using narrow intelligence but it’s still incapable of complex decision making which is way beyond mathematical and database-driven decision making. General intelligence allows a person to react based on a situation, treat events with a logical and an emotional approach while machines can’t, at least for the next few decades.

General AI vs Narrow AI – The Superior of the Two?

General AI is far superior to Narrow AI as the latter is used predominantly to produce search results based on mathematics and massive chunks of data. Infusing Narrow AI in machines makes a person’s life easier as they are capable of handling repetitive tasks and complex algorithms quickly. Mobile apps are a great invention and so is the internet which largely relies on Narrow AI. Making computers think like humans is a distant dream but they are steering close to mimicking human actions and may soon become capable of substituting people in more ways than we imagine now.
