A Look On The Mali G72 GPU

According to the average usage of a modern smartphone, a GPU is the part of the SoC that has become extremely important. The new Huawei Mate 10 will be powered by a Mali-G72 GPU. Presented on May, 2017, this GPU is based on an improved Bifrost architecture, with no radical alterations.

While on a high level there aren’t many differences when comparing to the Mali-G71, this new GPU will offer a greater energy performance (25% ca.) and the 20% of better performance density, which will lead, in total, to a 40% performance improvements.
Mali-G72 will present a reduced write bandwidth when using advanced rendering techniques, and also increase L1 cache, tiler buffer and writeback cache dimensions.

Other bandwidth reductions will be achieved by using Pixel Local Storage (or PLS) instead of classic MRT.

Huawei Mate 10

As stated before, HiSilicon Kirin 970 will power the Mate 10 flagship. Huawei decided to work on this device to fight the new Samsung phablet: Samsung Galaxy Note 8. The Huawei Mate 10 will have a total borderless display, with an aspect ratio of 18:9 and a resolution of 2160×1080 pixels.
