WhatsApp has been slowly adding new features to the chat app, among them photo albums, ability to share all file types, recall messages sent to the wrong persons as well as a new photo filters feature where users can add filters to photos before sharing them with friends.
Not all of these features are available to users of WhatsApp. In fact, for instance, the photo albums and filters features are only available to those using the chat app on iPhones. As for those on Android, only those part of the beta channel can enjoy these features, with the stable version expected to get the same treat in the coming days or weeks.
Now, there are more features that the beta version of WhatsApp has also received over the past few days. One such feature is the ability to search emojis from within the app. This is not a new feature to some people, especially since quite a number of Keyboard apps already offer the feature natively. However, starting with the current beta version, you will no longer need to download a third-party keyboard app in order to enjoy searching emojis on your phone, rather, WhatsApp wants this feature built right into the app.
WhatsApp already comes with support for emojis, however, in order to use a specific emoji that suits your needs, one has to keep scrolling sideways until they reach what they feel is ideal to use in a given conversation. With the ability to search emojis, this cumbersome activity will be no more. But how does this emoji search really work?
In order to search for an emoji on WhatsApp, all you need is to start a conversation in the beta version 2.17.246 for Android. As usual, simply tap on the emoji icon and you will see a list of emojis appear. However, unlike before, you will also see a search icon appearing at the bottom and when you hit this icon, you will be able to type the name of the emoji you need to use in your conversation. When done, WhatsApp will bring about a series of suggestions in a new bar and from the list, you can pick the one that suits your needs and use it as usual.
This is definitely a much-needed addition to WhatsApp, especially at a time when the use of these characters is becoming more and more entertaining for the more than 1.2 billion people that use this chat app. So far, we don’t know when the stable version will receive the feature, but it won’t be long before this happens, hopefully.
Another feature that is now available to WhatsApp for iPhone users but has been around for Android users for a while now is video streaming. With this feature, you no longer need to fully download a video before you can watch it, rather, the video will continue downloading in the background as you continue watching it, just like it happens on those YouTube videos. As long as you have a stable internet connection, the video will buffer in the background as you watch the sections that have already loaded.
WhatsApp users on iOS will now start seeing a Play icon instead of the old download option when a video is shared. Simply tap on this icon and the video will start playing immediately. Unlike the emoji search feature that is available in the beta version of WhatsApp for Android, iOS users on the stable channel can now stream videos. All you need is to ensure that you are using version 2.17.31, but reports say that the feature is rolling out gradually, so don’t be surprised if your latest version of the app doesn’t have it just yet.
