It looks like these days one of the most important factors when choosing to buy a new smartphone is the camera department. All major tech companies took note of this and started modifying their designs in order to fit customer needs the most, but one company stands out from the rest is Asus. The Taiwanese multifunctional  is known for always making their cameras a key selling point to their devices and recently Asus just unveiled its latest camera centric ZenFone Zoom 3 during CES 2017 and today we’re going to pin it against its predecessor ZenFone Zoom and see what major improvements Asus is bringing to the design and camera departments.

Display

The new ZenFone 3 Zoom ships with a 5.5 inch full HD display that comes with a pixel resolution of 1920 x 1080 that’s coated with the latest Corning Gorilla Glass 5. On the other hand, the older device features a similar sized 5.5 inch full HD display that comes with the same pixel resolution but it’s only using Gorilla Glass 4. This resemblance is rather surprising since everyone expected the new model to feature a Super AMOLED display.

Camera

As previously mentioned both devices have been designed to have incredible cameras. The older device is equipped with a rear 13MP camera that as its name implies specializes in zooming. The camera features all the standard sensors such as OIS, LED flash and laser autofocus. The camera has been optimized to the point that the picture quality ZenFone Zoom is able to produce is quite exceptional. Now to the new version, Asus equipped the device with a dual rear setup that’s composed of two 12MP cameras, one that snaps wide pictures with an aperture of f/1.7 and the second which specializes in zooming giving users the ability to take pictures up to 12X zoom distances. It’s pretty clear that the new model is able to snap even more impressive pictures.

Verdict

While the design remains the same, the camera department has been significantly improved. It’s great seeing that Asus followed the trend set by Apple and decided to install a rear dual setup because this way users are able to snap amazing pictures that come close the quality DSLR cameras bring.
