Android 7.0, better known as Nougat, has been around for several months now, but it’s still not available in many Android smartphones and tablets. Xiaomi devices — particularly the Mi5, Redmi Note 4, and Redmi 4 Prime — are some of the makes and models that are still waiting for the latest firmware update to reach them.
Fortunately, if you own one of these devices, there’s some good news: you’ll most likely receive the Nougat update within this year. In fact, the Mi5 is the first Mi device to receive the MIUI 8 Global Beta ROM update, which is based on Android 7.0.
Xiaomi announced on November 26 that it has accepted testers who would take the Nougat-based MIUI 8 on a practice run on the Mi5. The Chinese company closed the registration on November 30, so those who own the Mi5 can no longer sign up as testers and will have to wait for the official release of the update. It’s not yet clear when the stable version would be released, but the fact that testing is already underway means that the final version might be rolled out within the next few weeks.
As for the Redmi Note 4 and Redmi 4 Prime, Xiaomi has not made any official announcements as to when these models would receive the Android Nougat update. However, tech experts assume that these devices will definitely get Nougat since they’re new to the field; the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 was released just in August 2016, while the Xiaomi Redmi 4 Prime was rolled out on November 2016. This means that they fall within the 18-month update period of Android devices and are eligible to get the latest firmware updates. They’re also built with high-quality chipsets — a Helio X20 for the Redmi Note 4 and a Qualcomm MSM8953 Snapdragon 625 for the Redmi 4 Prime — that are powerful enough to support Nougat.
Popular tech blog Xiaomi Advices does not include the Redmi Note 4 and the Redmi 4 Prime in the list of devices that would receive Android Nougat through the MIUI 8 update. If this holds true, the two phones might get the update when MIUI 9 is released, which will reportedly happen on May or June.
