Android Nougat was released in the middle of last year, yet it’s available in only a handful of devices. This has lead many Android device owners to ask: will the latest firmware find its way to my make and model?

Well, if you own a Samsung Galaxy J7 2015, a J7 2016, or a J7 Prime, the answer seems to be “Yes”. These three models have been recently released (particularly the last two units), which greatly increases their chance of receiving Android Nougat.

If you have a Samsung Galaxy J7 2015, though, you shouldn’t be too complacent. This model was released on June 2015, which means it’s now technically 19 months old and has just gone over the 18-month update window that Android device manufacturers follow. If Samsung feels generous, it might include the J7 2015 in its list of devices that will receive Android Nougat. Otherwise, you’ll have to resign yourself to the fact that you’re stuck with Marshmallow or get a newer phone that’s eligible for Android 7.0 or 7.1.1.

If you own a Samsung Galaxy J7 2016 or a J7 Prime, on the other hand, you can breathe a sigh of relief since you’ll most likely be eligible to get Nougat. The J7 2016 was released on April 2016 while the J7 Prime was rolled out on September 2016, so they’re still within the 18-month window.

However, it’s important to note that the Android Nougat update for your device will not arrive any time soon. Samsung is currently focused on releasing the stable Android 7.1.1 update for the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge and developing the Nougat update for the S6, S6 Edge, and S6 Edge Plus. Because of this, it would probably take some time before the South Korean tech giant can release Android Nougat for older and non-flagship models.

Like everyone else, you can wait for Samsung to release the official Nougat update for your Samsung Galaxy J7 2015, J7 2016, or J7 Prime. If you can’t wait for it, though, you might want to download a custom ROM that will install Nougat features into your device. Just remember that using custom ROMs comes with risks, so proceed with caution.
