As 2016 is coming to an end WhatsApp have made the announcement that they will cancel their support for older devices as this makes more room for them to focus on future devices that are to be launched in 2017.  They will terminate the support for phones which run Windows Phone 7, iOS 6 and Android versions earlier than Gingerbread.

Not all devices will have the same treatment from the guys from WhatsApp as they’ve spared the likes of BlackBerry and Nokia. Furthermore, they’ve prolonged their support until June 30th 2017. One of the reasons of this move must be to help them grow further as a company as their full fledged focus will be thrown at devices that are to be launched in 2017.

Devices that sport operating systems which include the likes of BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10, Nokia Series 40 and Symbian Series 60 got lucky as WhatsApp had a change of heart regarding them. You might want to upgrade to a newer device though as the ones that sport respective OS are rather outdated and prone to security issues.

It is regarded as a necessary evil as it will improve future features that will be encountered on newer handsets. By not doing this WhatsApp will surely lose its spot in the messaging app competition and this is the last thing that they want.

Further messaging apps are set to follow this procedure if they want to keep up with its competitors. If this decision affects you bear in mind that you’ll either need to upgrade your device or opt for another messaging app. There’s a plethora of options to choose from but we highly advise you to aim for the one that appeals most to you because it’s only a matter of preference.
