Samsung didn’t have a particularly good 2016. It all started out great with the release of new products but that mood quickly turned for the worse when several reports popped up about their Note 7 phones exploding.

The problem wasn’t one that could be fixed apparently as the device was recalled. Then again, a shining light of Samsung’s year has to be the release of Android 7.0 Nougat.

The seventh version of the hugely popular mobile operating system was expected to be rolled out to the Note 7. However, the ability of the device to turn into a ball of flames quickly changed that. As such, Samsung shifted focus to the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, two devices they also released in 2016. A Nougat beta test program was offered to users of those phones so they can see how the OS runs on their device before it’s officially sent out.

Apart from the S7 and S7 Edge, a couple other phones about two years old are also getting updates. Those include the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy Tab S2, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. With regards to when, there are rumors that Samsung will try to push out updates for the S7 and S7 Edge before 2016 ends.

The rest of the aforementioned devices will get updated soon after. Given there was an S6 running on Android 7.0 on GFXBench this year is a good indication that the update might be coming sooner than expected.

Samsung usually takes a lot of time with OS updates and it’s highly likely that users of the devices mentioned in this article will be getting Nougat in 2017. Some devices, like the LG G5, have already received Android 7.0 so Samsung users will just have to wait a bit longer.
