2016 is almost over yet there are still smartphones that haven’t received an Android Nougat update. When will the updates start rolling out for those devices? Here’s a list:

So far, the only confirmed devices that will receive Nougat are the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. We know that because of the Nougat beta test program that Samsung announced in November. We have also learned about Nougat development ongoing for the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy Tab S2. There is also confirmation that the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, and Galaxy S6 Edge+ will be receiving Nougat as well. Recently, GFXBench also unveiled an S6 running on Nougat.

While those listed above are the confirmed devices, it’s the when that still needs to be answered. The closest estimate is five to six months after the official Nougat release date. This estimate is based on the timeline between the Marshmallow release and its official rollout. Since Nougat was released in August, we can expect any of the devices listed above to be updated around January 2017 and a little after that.

Sony was kind enough to release a list of devices that would get Android 7.0 but didn’t give a specific date as to when they would receive it. These are the devices getting the update:

  • Xperia X Compact
  • Xperia XZ
  • Xperia X Performance
  • Xperia XA Ultra
  • Xperia XA
  • Xperia X
  • Xperia Z5 Premium
  • Xperia Z5 Compact
  • Xperia Z5
  • Xperia Z4 Tablet
  • Xperia Z3+

While Sony also took about five months to release Marshmallow for compatible devices, there’s been confirmation from the unofficial Xperia Blog that Nougat has started rolling out for the Sony Xperia X Performance. The update for the other devices can be coming soon or in 2017.

Just like Sony, Motorola provided a list of phones that will be getting Android 7.0. These are:

  • Nexus
  • Moto Z Play Droid
  • Moto Z Play
  • Moto Z Force Droid
  • Moto Z Droid
  • Moto Z
  • Droid Maxx 2
  • Droid Turbo 2
  • Moto X Force
  • Moto X Play
  • Moto X Style
  • Moto X Pure Edition (3rd Gen)
  • Moto G Play (4th Gen)
  • Moto G Plus (4th Gen)
  • Moto G (4th Gen)

Motorola is one of the quicker ones to roll out new Android updates to their users. While an October prediction was made for Nougat on Motorola devices, the actual roll out was delayed by a month. The first devices to get an update were the Verizon Moto Z and the Moto Z Force on November 18. Updates for the rest of the devices are coming soon.

Android Nougat was released in August but with the year about to end, some devices still didn’t get the update. Getting Nougat rolled out to devices has been tough given that chipset makers, smartphone makers and even cellular carries all need to be on the same page for it to push through. That said, the devices listed here will surely get Android 7.0 but the waiting game must also be played.
