In 2015, Apple launched their 4th-generation Apple TV. Shortly after that, they began phasing out the Apple TV 3. Now, the product is completely removed from Apple’s online store. Although links still exist to the Apple 3 device, they now redirect to its successor.
An email from Apple to employees and educators, which was obtained by 9to5Mac, stated that the Cupertino company will still fulfill backlog orders for the product but will be redirecting their focus on the fourth-generation TV in the future.
The email stated that the “Apple TV (3rd generation), MD/199LL/A, has reached end of life and is now discontinued.”
That’s pretty bad news for those still wishing for a jailbreak for the third-generation TV. The decision to discontinue the third-generation TV didn’t come as a surprise because Apple has been pulling out the device from their stores since September.
Despite that, refurbished models of Apple TV 4’s predecessor is still on sale with prices starting at $59. So if you want to get one, you better act fast as merchandise won’t be around for long.
Now that Apple is focusing efforts on Apple TV 3’s successor, does this mean there is no hope of a jailbreak? Truth be told, it looks that way.
It’s a sad affair, really. The first three generations of Apple TVs were rather bland in their services. Jailbreaking the device seemed to be the only way users can get the best experience. The signs are pretty clear as well that users are not getting a jailbroken version of Apple TV 3. While that may be the case, Apple TV 4 is actually proving to be quite the beast: it can play video, music and movies from an iPhone or iPad via AirPlay as well as browse a number of apps and games available on the App Store.
