Chinese manufacturer OnePlus has confirmed that the Android Nougat update is indeed coming to some of its devices.
Specifically, it’s coming to the OnePlus 3, which is the company’s latest “flagship killer” and was released on June. During a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) session on September 27, the OnePlus team revealed that they’re currently working on the Nougat update for their latest phone. A few days later, OnePlus founder and CEO Pete Lau posted a video on Twitter, showing a OnePlus 3 running on Android Nougat.
These confirm that OnePlus 3 will indeed get the Nougat update, so the question now is “when”. According to the OnePlus team, “we cannot share a timeline right now, but we are already actively working on it.” Some tech experts believe that the update will be rolled out before the year ends, while others say that it might be pushed to next year to coincide with the release of the latest OxygenOS update.
Aside from the OnePlus 3, the OnePlus 2 will also receive the Android Nougat update. The OnePlus team confirmed on Reddit that the update will be rolled out to the OnePlus 2 (which was last year’s flagship device), although it’s not clear as to when this would happen. There are some theories that the OnePlus 2 will receive the update a month after the OnePLus 3 so, if the latter would be updated before the year ends, the OnePlus 2 may get Nougat in early 2017.
As for the OnePlus X, it’s not yet clear whether this model would get the Android Nougat update or not. Considering that it has just received Marshmallow (almost a year after the update was released), it would most likely be a long time before Nougat would find its way to the OnePlus X.
If you own a OnePlus X and can’t wait for the update, you can use CyanogenMod to install Android Nougat in your phone. A OnePlus X CM14 ROM has already been developed, and you can give it a try to have a taste of Nougat and enjoy its new features. Read this guide to find out how.
