Android 7.0, nicknamed Nougat, is Google’s latest mobile OS. It was officially released on August 22, 2016 after a developer release in March. The update actually came a bit early as the OS was expected to drop in September. But now, it’s here and the wait begins for users of various mobile phones all over the world.
Of course, Google’s own smartphones were the beneficiaries of the latest Android OS. Right after Nougat dropped, Google announced that the Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, Nexus 9, Nexus Player, Pixel C and Android One will be getting the update.
While all is well in the world of pricey smartphones, what about the budget and mid-range phones? Are they getting a slice of the Nougat pie as well? Given that most of them sport the Android OS, why not right? Well, the answer is quite tricky actually.
Nougat Update for Xiaomi Note 3, Note 4 and Redmi 3
Xiaomi produces budget and mid-range smartphones in the market, and they are pretty popular in Asia. While higher priced models like Galaxy are also available, those who don’t want to spend too much on a phone but still want great features can opt for models such as the Note 3, Note 4 and Redmi 3.
But the bigger question is: are these devices getting the update or not? That’s a tough one to answer given Xiaomi was really late in rolling out Marshmallow. Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) dropped in October 2015 and despite announcing final stages of tests in December, Xiaomi users got the update in April of the following year.
If Xiaomi still takes as long to tinker with Nougat, then users can expect a 2017 roll out for their devices. As of this writing, Xiaomi hasn’t given an official statement as to which devices will be getting an update. The Mi 4, Mi 3 and Mi Note all got Android 6.0.
According to the rumor mill, the upcoming Xiaomi Mi Note 2 and the Mi Note Pro might come with Android Nougat pre-installed. These devices are scheduled to be launched this year so we just have to wait and see.
