When a preview build of Android M was released in 2015, users of Sony Xperia were able to get a preview. Following the same fashion, Xperia users were one of the first to try the Android N preview build released in March 2016. Despite making this available for Xperia users, not everyone jumped in. After all, this is a preview build and can still be riddled with bugs and other faults.
So those who wanted the final build had to wait a couple more months for the official release. While Google estimated September launch, the actual release was pushed out on August 22.
While the smartphones under Google were the first to taste the Nougat goodness, users of other phone brands still have to wait. But what’s clear is that some models won’t be getting a slice of the Nougat pie. Why is that? Usually, newer devices benefit from new releases because their hardware is more compatible.
But now that the Nougat update is finally here, which of the Sony Xperia devices will be getting version 7?
Nougat Update for Sony Xperia X, XZ, Z5 and Z3+
Sony published on their blog that they will be releasing Android 7.0 Nougat for a number of their devices. Here are the phones that will be getting an update:
- Xperia Z3+
- Xperia Z4 Tablet
- Xperia Z5
- Xperia Z5 Compact
- Xperia Z5 Premium
- Xperia X
- Xperia XA
- Xperia XA Ultra
- Xperia X Performance
- Xperia XZ
- Xperia X Compact
As seen on the list, the Sony Xperia X, XZ, Z5 and Z3+ will all be getting Android 7.0 Nougat. While that is clear, it’s the when that still needs to be answered. Based on the Marshmallow updates, the Z5, Z4 Tablet and Z3+ got updated five months after the release. So there’s reason to believe the same timeframe might apply for Nougat.
Sony rolls out updates in phases. Not only that, the timing and availability will also depend on the market or operator. So again, it’s a wait and see period for Xperia users.
