Android Nougat has been released more than a month ago and is now available on Google Nexus devices. It still has to make its way to other makes and models, leading people to wonder: when will I get Nougat on my phone?
Unfortunately, if you own either the Samsung Galaxy S4 or the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, it seems that you’re not in luck. Samsung has not confirmed it yet but, if we consider the pattern that the South Korean tech giant has followed over the years, it’s highly likely that the S4 and Note 3 will not get the Android Nougat update.
Samsung Galaxy S4 and Nougat
The Galaxy S4 was released on April 2013, which means that it’s already three years old. This alone makes it less likely for the S4 to receive Nougat since Samsung usually distributes new Android firmware updates to models that are two years old or younger.
If you own a Galaxy S4, you can get Android Nougat by installing a custom ROM. One of the best options is the JDC v7.0 Nougat-based AOSP ROM for Galaxy S4, which you can download from romhut.com/versions/aosp-7-0-20160901-jflte-gsm-zip. By downloading it, your S4 will acquire Nougat features such as night mode, multi-window options, and improved battery life. Take note, though, that this only works on Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE GT-I9505; if you try to install this in another model, it can brick your device. Check your phone’s model number by going to Settings and tapping on About Phone.
Before installing the custom ROM, you should first back up your data, root your phone, and ensure it has at least 80 percent battery life. Remember that installing a custom ROM can void your warranty and brick your phone if done incorrectly, so proceed with the installation at your own risk.
Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Nougat
The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 was released on September 2013, making it three years old and most probably ineligible to receive the Android Nougat update.
Fortunately, just like with the S4, you can update your Galaxy Note 3 to Nougat by downloading a custom ROM. One of your best choices is Cyanogenmod 14, which is based on Android Nougat and comes with great features like Theme Support, Battery Saver, and RAM management for improved multitasking. Read this guide to know how to download and install Cyanogenmod 14 in your Note 3.
