Recently, Facebook has launched the end-to-end encryption feature for its 1 billion users on the Messenger service they provide. You can turn on the Secret conversations in any chat you would like, thus making sure no third-party has access to your content.
The downside of this is the fact that you have to turn it on for each chat in particular. In fact, there are two ways you can secretly talk to somebody via Messenger:
- Tap on the new message icon then on the upper right corner choose the option Secret. Then you have to select who you want to talk to and you’re set.
- You can open an already existing chat, tap on the name of the recipient and from the Settings menu choose Secret Conversation.
The end-to-end encryption ensures that no other party can access the private messages, so only the sender and the receiver know the contents of the message. Facebook doesn’t even have access to them since they won’t be stored on their servers at all.
The best part is that you can choose for how long the other person will be able to see the message, starting from 5 seconds to a day. The recipient will only see the message for as long as you set the conversation to, then it will disappear forever. Of course, you can turn off the timer completely if you want to.
Anybody using the Facebook Messenger will be able to use this feature, but keep in mind that this would cancel some other features. You won’t be able to send GIFs, voice messages or videos, for instance. Also, you cannot make mobile payments or initiate a voice call.
Remember that all the other messages besides the Secret Conversation ones will still be available for hackers and other third-parties if they gain access to them.
