Sharing is caring!

Video calls have been around for more than a decade already, and more communication apps are providing this feature, claiming their service and product is better than another. Which video call platform is really the best? The answer lies in what features you are looking for. Here is a brief review of Google Duo, Skype, and Google Hangouts, three of the most used applications for video calling.

Features and User Interface

Google Duo aims to make video calls a no-fuss task. You simply get a live video feed from your front camera and a list of your contacts. There aren’t any unnecessary features to get in the way. You can launch a call with just one tap. There are a couple of big buttons for other functions, such as ending a call, muting, or reversing the camera feed.

On the other hand, Skype and Hangouts offer more features aside from video calling, such as instant messaging, group videoconferencing, and filesharing. They are mainly advertised as tools for full collaboration, thus the inclusion of more communication features. They are more versatile, but they can also be more complicated and cluttered to use if all you want to do is make video calls.

Availability and Platforms

Google Duo can be downloaded on Android and iOS mobile devices. There is no desktop and web client available at present. Skype and Hangouts are more widely supported on various platforms. Skype is largely used on desktops running on Windows, Linux, and Mac. It can also be downloaded on Android and iOS devices, and is currently the only app among the three that is supported on Windows Phone and Xbox. Hangouts is available via mobile apps for Android and iOS, or via a web app on desktop.

If you want a tool that is easy to use, simple and straightforward, then Google Duo is the way to go as it provides a reliable and smooth video calling service. On the other hand, if you want a complete communications package, Skype and Hangouts are great choices, with the former leading in the race a bit over the latter thanks to its ability to transfer any filetype (Hangouts allows only image transfers).
