GoPro is the first name that crosses your mind when someone asks you what action camera is indicated for filming themselves while climbing a mountain, riding a bike or surfing. The base Hero model costs $200, but adventure enthusiasts who afford to spend $499 on the Hero4 Black will enjoy a pro-quality capture. However, there are plenty other cameras that are much cheaper and offer a great performance and we’ll talk about the most popular ones.

Drift Stealth 2

Drift Innovation has been releasing action cameras for almost a decade and its latest products are Ghost S and Stealth 2. The latter costs $84.99 and it has a 300-degree rotating lens, which allows users to mount the device almost anywhere. It has a 12MP camera with a 7-element lens which records Full HD videos and in slow motion. Its body isn’t waterproof, so it can be used while riding high waves if it’s not protected by a separate casing. The display is mono graphic LCD with a size of 1.3-inch, and it will show you the camera status and a few modes. With the Drift app that you’ll install on your smartphone, you’ll be able to control the camera remotely, and via WiFi, you’ll be able to share media easily.

Contour ROAM3

It costs $89 (camera only), but if you want also the charging kit and a flex strap mount, you’ll pay in total $133.15. Its body is made of rugged aluminum and it’s water resistant up to 30 feet. It has a 270-degree rotating lens, a 5MP camera shooting 1080p video up to 120 fps (up to 3.5 hours), which includes single shot & interval photo modes, and photos and videos are stored on the 8 GB memory card that is offered in the box. However, you can add a microSD card with a maximum capacity of 32GB.

Xiaomi YI

Besides smartphones, the Chinese company is also known for creating action cameras. The YI costs $76.99, it sports a 16MP Sony camera sensor which supports a 155-degree wide-angle lens and it’s capable of recording 1080p video at up to 120 fps and some of the camera modes include Time-lapse, Timed photo and timed video. The battery is removable and with a capacity of 1,010 mAh, and you’ll have to buy a microSD card (up to 64GB).


Its price is $115.99, but you’ll get more than ten accessories – such as a waterproof housing, tripod adapter, bicycle stand etc. The battery isn’t very big (900 mAh) and it allows you to record only 70 minutes of video, but you can keep a spare and replace it when you’re in the middle of the action. The camera is 14MP and has a 170-degree wide-angle lens, being capable of recording video at 1080p.
