Social media is continuously growing in popularity. New messaging applications appear overnight, competing with the veteran applications that have hundreds of millions of users. But as much as everyone loves socializing, there’s no filter to block bullies’ access to the internet and they pick on the weak and don’t stop until they destroy their psyche. Cyber bullying is a real problem and many platforms have taken measures against online harassment. Now, the picture-sharing service Instagram is preparing to launch new tools that will allow users to choose which comments should be posted on their photos.
Instagram has over 500 million active users and among them are hidden many stalkers who comment on pictures uploaded by their targets. Users feel very uncomfortable when reading offensive comments from their followers, as their reputation can be destroyed by liars who invent stories about them. Soon, Instagram will have more control over the comments that will be posted on their accounts, and they will have the freedom to turn off comments on their pictures, preventing bullies who saying bad things about them. Nicky Jackson Colaco, head of public policy for Instagram said that “Our goal is to make Instagram a friendly, fun and, most importantly, safe place for self expression.”
In addition, users will be able to create lists of banned words and when bullies will use the, they will be automatically hidden. The new features have started rolling out to users with “high volume comment threads” and soon, all famous people and everyday users will benefit from these tools.
In a first phase, users might see glitches, but they are encouraged to report them to developers, so they can fix them in short time. These tools will be available to all users in the succeeding months and we’ll see fewer examples of online harassment. And users will feel safer when posting content on their accounts.
