In February of this year, WhatsApp announced they would no longer be supporting several devices. You might ask, “What was the reason for doing so?” It’s a valid question given the popularity of the app. If something is so loved, why would you want to end support, right? Well, WhatsApp said that they want to direct their efforts to the mobile platforms that are widely used today. So platforms such as Blackberry, Nokia S40, Nokia Symbian S60, Android 2.1, Android 2.2, Windows Phone 7.1 and iPhone 3GS/iOS6 will have support terminated by year’s end.

As you’ve noticed, Nokia Asha didn’t make the cut. In other words, users can still get WhatsApp for devices under that line. This means the following are still supported:

  • Nokia Asha 201
  • Nokia Asha 205 Chat Edition
  • Nokia Asha 210
  • Nokia Asha 230
  • Nokia Asha 300
  • Nokia Asha 302
  • Nokia Asha 303
  • Nokia Asha 305
  • Nokia Asha 306
  • Nokia Asha 308
  • Nokia Asha 309
  • Nokia Asha 310
  • Nokia Asha 311
  • Nokia Asha 500
  • Nokia Asha 501
  • Nokia Asha 502
  • Nokia Asha 503

The latest stable version for the Asha is 2.16.4, but there is an SIS available for 2.16.38. The question is: should you update? To answer that is to look at what changed, and here they are:

  • Messages, photos, videos, voice messages, documents and calls are secured with end-to-end encryption. This denies third parties access to your private communications with others.
  • Messages are encrypted automatically. You no longer need to change the settings or set up a secret chat just to ensure your communication is secure.

Sounds good, right? But there seems to be a catch: end-to-end encryption will work when you and those you communicate with are on the latest version of WhatsApp. Now, that won’t always be the case because you can’t expect everyone to always keep their apps up to date.

So is it worth it? The answer is totally up to you. Besides, this is an APK. The stable version is the one you get from WhatsApp’s official site. But in case you’re curious about version 2.16.38, then you’re free to give it a shot.
