WhatsApp’s developers had a light weekend – some of them are on vacation, enjoying the sun, bathing at ocean or doing other relaxing activities. Their colleagues had finished a new beta update, which is 2.16.161 and they uploaded it to the Google Play store, where it’s available for download to beta testers.

WhatsApp 2.16.161 APK has a size of 27.75 MB, but there’s no change log for it, and we’re assuming that it comes only with bug fixes and performance improvements. It can be downloaded from the Google Play store, but those who haven’t signed up to be a beta tester can find the beta update from WhatsApp’s official website or from trusted sources such as APK Mirror, but Unknown Sources setting must be enabled.

The new update hasn’t brought any new feature, but we remind you that version 2.16.150 introduced six new icons and two of them were named “draw_tool_background_selected.xml” and “draw_tool_background_normal.xml”, suggesting that the developers were thinking about letting users draw directly from the application, just like Snapchat users are able to do with pictures they send to their friends.

Some time ago, another useful feature made its appearance in 2.16.118 beta – message quotes and replies. So, when selecting a message in a conversation, a Reply button appears at the top of the screen, where there are also options to delete, star and forward. By tapping the quoted message, it will be shown as a preview on top of the text entry box and here you can add your reply. If you change your mind about the quote, just tap the x button.

Currently, nobody can give us any information about the rumored video calling feature, as it hasn’t been spotted again in a beta update, after it appeared in version 2.16.80, but it wasn’t enabled, and the developers have removed it in short time.
