WhatsApp video calling is soon to be released for Android and iPhone. Soon being the operative word, because the video calling button is already available on the app, but it is still not functional.
The video call button quietly made its way on the Android beta app, but it was first seen on the iOS platform, which is why iOS users are expected to get first dibs on the update. Whichever is the case, WhatsApp users still have to wait for video call to be activated.
But they don’t have to wait doing nothing and just wish the features would be available at the end of the day. They can use Booyah as a workaround.
Booyah is a third-party app that is free for download for Android or iOS from the Google Play store or Apple App Store, respectively. This will allow you to make a video call to any of your WhatsApp contacts or start a group video call. But this only works if you and your contacts have the app installed. It will ask for permission to access your camera, microphone, Wi-Fi and photos/media/files.
The app is developed by Rounds Entertainment with other team of developers. Its existing chat program Rounds works similar to Facebook Messenger, and serves as an alternative to Messenger, in case you prefer not to use it.
According to Rounds CEO Dany Fishel, they decided to pair Booyah with WhatsApp, as it is a “pioneer in messaging”.
Do you have you WhatsApp installed? Time to download and install Booyah.
- Search and download the app from the Google App store or Apple App Store, depending on your device.
- Wait for the app to install like any regular app, allow permissions, and then wait for the installation to complete.
- Once done, you can then initiate a call, provided that your contacts also have Booyah installed.
When you make a call, you’ll be provided with a link to a video chat that your contact can click on to accept the call. While the conversation is underway, you can directly add other people in the conversation.
In the event that you close the application during a call, you would still be connected via voice but your video will freeze. People who have already used Booyah encountered some problems, but they would still use the app, despite such issues. Then again, no app is ever perfect. In fact, WhatsApp has its share of bugs with WhatsApp 2.16.4 for iOS.
