T-Mobile subscribers who own the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be delighted to know that they can now get the much-awaited Android Marshmallow update. Specifically, the smartphone will receive the Android 6.0.1 update, which comes with all the exciting features found in Android 6.0 (such as Android Pay, Doze battery optimization, and Google Now on Tap) plus new security patches and a “device slowness fix”.
T-Mobile’s Galaxy S5 update comes several weeks after Sprint rolled out the update for their variant of the S5. T-Mobile’s rollout started on May 23.
The Marshmallow update for the Samsung Galaxy S5 has the firmware build numbers G900TUVU1GPE1 and G900T3UVU1GPE1. The firmware build number that phones will receive depend on their specific model.
The update is around 1GB in sizes so, before downloading it, users must first check their phones and ensure they have enough memory left to accommodate the update. They should also ensure that their device is fully charged or has at least 50 percent battery life; this way, their phone won’t shut down in the middle of downloading or installing the update, which can brick their device and make it useless.
The Android 6.0.1 update for the Samsung Galaxy S5 can be downloaded through Wi-Fi internet connection or through Samsung’s Smart Switch for PC. If users opt for the latter, they can download Smart Switch and install it in their computer. Once it’s done, they need to connect their phone to their computer using a USB cable, install any required drivers for their device, and open the Smart Switch program. It will automatically search for the Marshmallow update that’s available for their device and carrier and prompt them to download the required files.
The Marshmallow update for the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be done over the air (OTA). It’s important to note that OTA updates will be carried out in stages, which means that it might take days or even weeks for the update to reach all the T-Mobile subscribers around the U.S.
Just like with other updates, Galaxy S5 owners will receive a message notifying them of the availability of the Android 6.0.1 update. They can also manually check if the update is already available for their device and area by navigating to Settings >> About Device >> Software Update >> Check for Updates.
