The Sims is one of the most popular and best-selling video game series of all time. As a result, it’s not a question of if The Sims 5 will happen, but when. Since The Sims 4 is still fairly new, the release date of The Sims 5 might still be a long way off.
Let’s take a look through the series’ history as we consider what the next entry might have in store.
The Sims – Main Series
The first game in the series came out in February 2000. Although it was originally planned as an architecture game, the developers realized the Sims living in the homes were interesting enough to become the actual focus of the game. As a result, The Sims was born.
It focused on the daily life of Sims, who had some autonomy but relied on player commands for several activities, living near SimCity. In addition to managing Sim’s lives and needs, players could pause time to customize their Sim’s home.
This life-simulation game became a best-seller and received seven expansion packs that added new features: Livin’ Large, House Party, Hot Date, Vacation, Unleashed, Superstar, and Makin’ Magic.
The Sims 2
Over four years later, in September 2004, the sequel was released. The Sims 2 used a full 3D environment and was set 25 years after the first game.
It added several new features. One of the most notable is the aging process, where Sims began as infants and progressed through six stages of life until their eventual deaths. It also gave Sims goals, desires, and fears, along with new types of social interactions that determined how Sims felt about one another.
Like its predecessor, it was hugely successful. It received eight expansion packs with new features: University, Nightlife, Open for Business, Pets, Seasons, Bon Voyage, FreeTime, and Apartment Life. It also received a number of “stuff packs” that added new items.
The Sims 3
Five more years passed, and The Sims 3 came out in June 2009. Set 25 years after The Sims 2, this new entry featured a seamless neighborhood and improved the basic gameplay. It took the system the previous game used to determine Sims’ wants and fears and replaced it with a “Wishes” system. It also greatly expanded character customization and several of the game’s other features.
Once again, it did extremely well and received a total of eleven expansion packs: World Adventures, Ambitions, Late Night, Generations, Pets, Showtime, Supernatural, Seasons, University Life, Island Paradise, and Into the Future. Stuff packs also returned to add new items and other minor pieces of content.
The Sims 4
The current incarnation of the series, The Sims 4, came out after five more years, in September 2014. It has a new setting, and it redesigned the tools you use to create Sims and build homes. A big focus for this game is Sims’ moods and how they affect their interactions with other Sims.
However, The Sims 4 was criticized for removing some of the popular features from previous games in the series. Patches added a lot of content to the game, although some fan-requested features are still missing, such as toddlers.
It has been by far the most controversial of the Sims games so far, with a mixed reception. So far, it has received two expansion packs—Get to Work and Get Together—as well as two smaller “game packs” called Outdoor Retreat and Spa Day. Several stuff packs have also been released.
The Sims Spin-Offs
Along with the main series, The Sims has seen a number of additional games, spin-offs, and console games. There have been online games, mobile games, and even an RPG spin-off called The Sims Medieval. Some of the expansion packs have even been released as separate games for consoles, such as The Sims 2: Pets.
The Sims 5
This is the history of The Sims, but what will its future be? The Sims 4 has sharply divided fans and made many players displeased with the series. It feels as though it would be a mistake for The Sims 5 to follow the same path.
Main-series games in The Sims series have come out every 4-5 years so far, with the expansion packs adding content in between. If the pattern holds up, we shouldn’t expect to see The Sims 5 until 2018 or 2019. However, that’s by no means certain, especially with the mixed feedback to The Sims 4.
The Sims has a rich history to draw on. Will The Sims 5 play similarly to one of its predecessors?
