Symbian is one of the platforms that WhatsApp will stop supporting by the end of this year, but that didn’t stop developers from releasing a new update for Nokia devices. WhatsApp 2.16.9 is in beta phase, which means that you won’t find it on the Nokia Store. However, you will download the .sis file from whatsapp.com/nokia and manually install it on your smartphone.
WhatsApp hasn’t released a change log for the latest beta version for Nokia, but users have noticed that a new display is displayed under chats, saying that “Messages you send to this chat are now secured with end-to-end encryption. Click for more info”. When tapping this message, it says “…… which means WhatsApp and 3rd parties can’t read them”, and at the end of the message is found a “Learn more” link.
End-to-end encryption was a necessity and WhatsApp wanted to follow Apple’s example, especially because the latter had problems with the FBI, after the agency has asked Apple to unlock an iPhone belonging to one of the shooters involved in the San Bernardino attacks. This feature was added to all WhatsApp versions and it makes sure that the messages are accessed only by the sender and receiver, based on an encryption key.
WhatsApp 2.16.9 can be installed on a variety of Symbian phones and users can manually check for updates by going to Menu > Settings > Updates, where the application will show the available update. Then, they’ll select the “Install update” button and the update will be downloaded and installed on their devices. However, this beta update can be downloaded from WhatsApp’s official website, as well. It’s not sure if it comes with other changes, but most likely, the developers have improved the application’s performance. If you find any bugs, we suggest you to report them to developers, so they can fix them as soon as possible.
