Windows 10 Mobile, released about a month ago, was able to deliver the promised attributes that come with the update from the carrier, more precisely the Current Branch of Windows 10 Mobile. The mobile OS was meant to fit all of the Windows retail handsets and 18 other devices specific to Windows Phone 8.1., but it seems that the users of the latter are still waiting for that particular update.
One tech blogger, Richard Hay, tested two phones that ran Windows Phone 8.1. – Lumia 640 and Lumia 830 and while they both show that they are eligible for that aforementioned upgrade but that they are waiting for the release from the carrier which is AT&T. The representatives did not respond to his question about the status update, and this was also happening while on the official site stated that the update was in effect for Windows Phone 8.1. Other users have confirmed that the same problem can be found both on AT&T and on Verizon Phones.
That being said, if you find yourself in the same situation, there is an alternative to getting the update: installing the Windows Insider app on the handsets and then join the Release Preview Ring. It will then result in this particular Windows 10 Mobile Build being installed on your phone and it will thus enable you to receive all the updates from the Current Branch.
But until then, maybe the carriers will release that update on all the listed mobile OSs as it is the proper thing to do.
