If you own a Nokia phone and are an avid WhatsApp user, you’ve probably already heard that the messaging app will stop supporting the Nokia S40 and Nokia Symbian S60 platforms when 2016 ends. This isn’t really surprising, considering that these platforms are several years old and don’t have the capacity to support the high-tech features that WhatsApp will inevitably release in the future.
Still, it’s not all doom and gloom for Nokia users. The end of 2016 is still far away, which means you have several months left to make the most of your old Nokia phone and prepare for your move to an Android, iOS, or Windows Phone device. WhatsApp has even released new updates for Nokia phones, proving that they continue to support Nokia users now even if they’d pull the plug at the end of the year.
WhatsApp 2.16.9 for Nokia Symbian S60
One of these upgrades is the 2.16.9 update for Nokia S60 phones. It doesn’t bring about any new and exciting features (which means you still won’t get to enjoy the Voice Calling feature), but it does fix bugs, make the app more stable, and give you a smoother messaging experience. Before you start downloading the update, though, make sure you meet the minimum requirements for it: an unlimited data plan and Nokia S60 (3rd edition and 5th edition), Symbian^3, Symbian Anna, or Symbian Belle Operating System.
If you’ve satisfied the minimum requirements for the app, you can update it by going to the WhatsApp Nokia page and downloading the SIS file for WhatsApp 2.16.9 for Nokia Symbian S60. Once you’ve done so, uninstall the current WhatsApp version that’s running on your phone then open the SIS file that you’ve just downloaded. Follow the instructions on the screen to install WhatsApp 2.16.9 in your phone.
The latest version will bring about some improvements to your WhatsApp experience, but don’t expect it to be perfect. Take note that it’s a beta update, so you may encounter some bugs along the way. These problems can be sorted out, though, when WhatsApp releases a stable version of the update.
WhatsApp End-to-End Encryption
Aside from the 2.16.9 update for Nokia phones, you also have to know about WhatsApp’s new end-to-end encryption. Basically, the company has been working for two years to roll out this encryption to all their users, and they have finished just recently. Starting now, WhatsApp users who use the latest version of the messaging app have the assurance that only they and their contacts have access to the text messages, voice messages, photos, and videos that they exchange with each other. With the encryption in place, no one else will be able to access your data — not hackers, governments, and even WhatsApp staff themselves.
