Windows 10 for smartphones rolled out in early 2016 as a successor to Windows 8.1.
The desktop version made its presence felt much earlier. The launch was made a year after Microsoft announced its plans to release the operating system. The all new Windows 10 platform has quite a few new and distinct features. A couple of such features include Windows Hello and Continuum. Many of the existing apps such as Snap Assist, Mail, and Calendar have also received interesting updates that make them work better than before. The following are some key and minor changes that have contributed overall to a smoother Windows experience.
Better User Interface
Presenting a whole new look to the screen with its revised user interface, Windows 10 makes navigating through your smartphone screen very easy. Highlights include a revised alarm app, a more detailed notification menu, new context menus, and keyboards that you can position to wherever you want on the screen. The keyboard feature proves to be useful when you use large Lumia phablets.
Voice Control and Audio Recording App
Voice control has undergone various modifications to enhance the way Cortana functions. Introduced in Windows 8.1, Cortana now responds to voice commands. It will give you a horde of answers to the simple questions you ask it. Apart from this, based on the commands you give it, Cortana will assist with you tasks like reading out your saved notes, creating reminders for to do tasks, giving directions to a place that you would like to go, and even restaurant reviews.
The audio recording app is a new feature of Windows 10. With this app, you can record a speech or your favorite song as you sing it.
With the all new Photos app, you can rest assured that your photos will appear correctly on all devices in the correct format. The app also presents a few other advantages. First, the app works in conjunction with OneDrive to sync the photos uploaded from your smartphone. This way, you can be assured of still having your photos intact even when you change your smartphone. Second, the app will collect all your photos together and remove multiples or duplicates shot in burst mode. The albums feature of this app will then arrange these photos much the same way as in a physical photo album.
This mode is turned to ON setting by default to make the screen viewing experience quite pleasant. Red eye elimination and screen brightness adjustment are some of the noteworthy contribution of this feature.
Microsoft Edge Web Browser
With Windows 10, Internet Explorer that has always been Microsoft’s preferred browser has taken a back turn. Instead, a new browser called Microsoft Edge has taken its place with appealing features like tabbed browsing, an address bar cum search box, a reading mode, a search grab tool, and doodles for your handset’s touchscreen. Cortana is also integrated into the browser. However, the icons of Microsoft Edge look just like that of Internet Explorer.
The favorite Microsoft chat app that ran on earlier versions of Windows on smartphones had some bugs that annoyed its users. With Windows 10, Microsoft has claimed that these Skype issues have been fixed and the app works without any flaw in the Lumia devices that have this operating system installed.
This all new feature allows the screen of your smartphone to activate a second screen – the screen your computer or TV. All you need to do is to connect your phone with a mouse and/or a keyboard. You can continue to use your smartphone screen the way you would normally use it.
Customized Start Screen
You can set your favorite photo as a background for your tiled screen or above the tiles too. It is also possible to manipulate the color of the tiles like in the earlier Windows versions and also decide their brightness levels. After you have made your customizations, you can use the Settings app to see the impact of the selected settings on your Start screen.
If you hate typing, the new Windows 10 keyboard is just what you want. A few swipes on the keyboard can get your email done. To position your cursor near the desired text, you just have to use the cursor controller. Similarly, those who enjoy texting can take benefit from the slew of new emojis available.
The first set of smartphones that received Windows 10 were Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL. There are a few other smartphones in the pipeline waiting for this release.
