A few days ago, Microsoft has announced that it will release the Skype UWP app to Windows 10 (both PCs and smartphones) and in a first phase, it will be tested out by the insiders from the program. The private beta-testing will be over soon and the application could be officially released in the near future.

The Skype universal application has a better performance on PC than on mobile devices, because on smartphones is still laggy and the developers need to work on it, in order to make it run flawlessly. Most likely, the PC owners subscribed to the Windows Insider program will get the Skype UWP app in a Redstone build, while the beta release window for mobile wasn’t announced yet.

The application will be close to the native client in terms of aesthetics and experience, offering a similar color scheme, emojis, push notifications and call features, alongside advanced Skype commands. The fonts and icons are slightly different and other elements still need to be polished, but until the application will be officially launched, the developers will put the finishing touches, so that everyone will be happy with the way Skype UWP will look and work.

The first version of the Skype Universal Windows Platform Preview app will be released in the coming weeks for the Windows Insiders, and on the Skype blog was published the list of features that will be added to this application:

– the possibility to sign in with a Microsoft Account or to link a Skype ID;
– show and change the user’s availability;
– all existing Skype contacts will appear in the list;
– the user will initiate a chat with anyone from his/her contact list;
– the user will know if the contact is typing a message;
– Logout;
– voice and video calls;
– text messages or containing images;
– emoticons and Mojis;
– notifications for incoming calls and messages outside of the application;
– group chats.

Upcoming features:

– chats with non Skype users;
– creating a group and sending group messages;
– group voice and video calling;
– screen sharing;
– file sharing;
– manage notifications from individual chats;
– and more.
