Owners of Windows Phone 8.1 devices can now rejoice as Microsoft has announced that it will be rolling out Windows 10 updates. However, the software giant has also stated that the list of devices that will receive the update is limited because Windows 10 delivers significant new innovations. According to Microsoft, many older devices are not able to successfully upgrade without an impact on the customer experience and their goal is to only offer the Windows 10 upgrade to devices that they are confident can continue to deliver a good customer experience. Oh well, better some than none.
The software giant has been testing various updates for the past few months, and now several Lumia handsets are finally going to get the Windows 10 update. The lucky ones are the owners of the Lumia 1520, 930, 640, 640XL, 730, 735, 830, 532, 535, 540, 635 1GB, 636 1GB, 638 1GB, 430, 435, BLU Win HD w510u, and the BLU Win HD LTE x150q.
Of course, even if Microsoft has already kicked off the implementation of the update, you should still expect to wait for it because the update will most likely be handled differently based on your network carrier and where you live. And unlike other updates for Windows Phone devices, it is not possible to upgrade just by checking the settings app. Microsoft has released the Windows 10 Upgrade Advisor app, and you can download this from the Windows Store to check if the update is available for your device.
To make sure your device is ready for the upgrade, follow these steps recommended by Microsoft.
- Back up your settings, messages, apps, and photos to the cloud before starting the upgrade. On the Start icon, swipe over all to the All apps list, select Settings app icon > Backup, then follow the instructions.
- Free up enough storage space to download and install the update. You can connect your phone to a computer and move your files there temporarily. You can also use the Upgrade Advisor app and it will recommend which files you can transfer to an SD card (if you have one installed) or to OneDrive. You can move your files back to your phone after the upgrade if there is still enough space.
- Make sure your phone doesn’t run out of battery during the upgrade. Plug it into a charger when you are going to download the update.
- Connect your phone to a WiFi network as the size of the update requires a reliable connection when downloading and installing.
Windows 10 Mobile Features
Windows 10 Mobile comes with a number of new features. For example, it has a new Start screen, Windows Hello, Continuum, better Live Tiles, Office and Outlook have major improvements, there is wider app support, and Cortana is now aligned with the desktop Windows 10 version. Microsoft may be making the right move to limit the update only to devices that will perform with the new features without any hiccups because even handsets that were made with Windows 10 in mind still had some problems, like the Lumia 950.
