LG attended the 2016 Mobile World Congress and with this occasion, the South Korean company has unveiled its latest flagship, the G5, which received a brand new look and a slightly smaller display. The phone will be available in the US in early April, but no specific date has been given. However, reports say that this will happen on April 8, as the LG G5 is expected to be released simultaneously, in Canada and in the UK.
The G5 will be available through carriers such as AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cellular, and Verizon and retailers such as Best Buy and B&H, but none of them has revealed the prices of this new flagship. Last year, the G4 and V10 were part of a promotion which offered the customers a secondary battery and a charging cradle for free, as well as a leather back. The promo will repeat and will be available for a limited time, so you’ll get the G5 alongside a free battery and a charging cradle.
The G5 is LG’s first modular phone, featuring an innovative design, an all metal body with physical buttons on the sides, being moved from their unusual place – below the rear camera. Also, the new phone has now two rear cameras, of 8MP and 16MP, with normal angle and wide angle lenses, being able to reach 135 degrees – more than the human eye is capable to capture. As for the front camera, its resolution is 8MP, but it has a normal angle.
The battery has been decreased from 3000mAh to 2800mAh, but it’s still removable. The screen is also smaller, featuring a diagonal of 5.3-inch, but its resolution was kept at 1440 x 2560 pixels, resulting in a pixel density of 554 ppi. Inside, it will have two versions of configurations: a Qualcomm MSM8996 Snapdragon 820 chipset with a dual-core 2.15 GHz Kryo & dual-core 1.6 GHz Kryo processor, Adreno 530 graphics and 4GB of RAM, while the other variant will be weaker, featuring a Qualcomm MSM8976 Snapdragon 652 chipset with a quad-core Cortex-A72 & quad-core Cortex-A53 processor, an Adreno 510 GPU and 3GB of RAM. Both variants are housing 32GB of internal memory, which is expandable up to 200GB.
In parallel, LG will release the G5 Friends, some modular accessories for the G5 smartphone that will transform it into a DSLR style camera, or a mobile VR viewer.
