Clash Royale is a free-to-play strategy game that is available for free download for mobile devices. It was developed by mobile game developer Supercell; the company is most well known for it’s development of the popular Clash of Clans game. As the name of their new game suggests, Clash Royale is set in the Clash of Clans universe, and while they are both strategy games, they are very different to each other.
The game is a MOBA that mixes in elements of a classic tower defence game and card games as players fight against each other to win the game. These three game genres can be difficult to learn, and the most popular games for them have very steep learning curves; thankfully, this is Clash Royale, and it’s been simplified which makes it perfect for newcomers.
It’s a two-lane MOBA with two support towers and the main King tower; the player needs to send out troops by using cards. The system is pretty straight-forwards and all the player needs to do is drop the card wherever they want to place the units. These cards have a specific Elixir cost which recharges over time. As an end-game twist, the energy regenerates much faster in the last 60 seconds which can completely change the course of the battle.
The matches are very short at only 3 minutes per game, but the mechanics are simple to learn and work well on a mobile device which is perfect for the short battles. The player just needs to have an internet connection to play the game, and the matchmaking works very quickly making this a good game for some fast PvP action.
Clash Royale does follow a freemium model which brings the excitement down a little bit; players are given chests to open which gives special rewards such as gold and new cards, however, the player can only hold two free chests in their inventory. Players can hold a larger amount of higher ranked chests at least; however they still need to wait for the chest to open. Each of the chests uses an unlock timer, and only one chest unlock timer can be active at once which forces players to think a little bit strategically for unlocking their rewards as well. Naturally, the player can pay to skip these timers also.
The game is simple, fun and the game mechanics are great, but the freemium based rewards model is a little bit frustrating at times, especially when the player is forced to wait eight hours for one chest to open. There is no large learning curve for a newcomer, and non-MOBA players will also enjoy the gameplay in this frantic PvP game.
Clash Royale is a mobile game and is available for free download on iOS and Android devices.
