The Google Nexus 4 was released in November 2012 with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean out of the box and in the spring of 2015 it was upgraded to 5.1 Lollipop. Unfortunately, because it’s too old and has a weak configuration, the phone was left off the official update list for the latest 6.0 Marshmallow. Fortunately, the users can still install this update using a custom ROM.

The first individual developer who built an Android 6.0 Marshmallow custom ROM for the Nexus 4 was Dmitry Grinberg, Russian émigré programmer, who explained that the users need to flash their device in order to use it. Later, CyanogenMod 13 brought CM 13, but the fans discovered bugs and the experience was far from being satisfactory.

In the meantime, Aldrin Holmes released its own Marshmallow build for the Nexus 4, which was codenamed Mako. So, if you’re willing to take risks and install any of these custom ROMs on your device, here’s what you need to do:

You will need to download TWRP to your computer, then transfer the file to your Nexus 4, using a USB cable. Now, you will install this open-source software custom recovery image on your rooted device and boot into Recovery Mode using the Quick Boot app or doing it manually, by turning off the phone and holding down three buttons at the same time: Volume Up, Volume Down and Power. When you will see the TWRP loading screen popping up, let go of the buttons.

After the TWRP UI loads up, you will reset to Factory Settings, then you will transfer one of the two ROM-GApps (which you’ve previously downloaded to your computer) to your phone. You will need to reboot into Recovery Mode again and you’ll choose Install when the TWRP UI will load up.

Now, you will find the location of the ROM and you will install it. When the installation process completes, install GApps following the same steps. In addition, you will need to download and install vocoderism’s ROM-GApps combo (do a simple search on the internet) and then reboot the phone once again. The Nexus 4 will run on Android Marshmallow.
