These two handsets will not run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow in the near future, even if Sony has said back in October that the Xperia M5 and Xperia M5 Dual will skip the Android 5.1 Lollipop update. We don’t know what made Sony to change its mind, but reports say that the SIM version (E5603, E5653 and E5606 models) have started receiving the build number 30.1.A.1.33, while the dual-SIM version (E5633, E5663 and E5643 models) are getting the build number 30.1.B.1.33.

The Sony Xperia M5 owners who will install Android 5.1 Lollipop on their devices will notice the big changes that this update comes with: the better memory management, improved volume mode control, the ability to take pictures using Sony’s Smartwatch 3 and, moreover, the January security update has been included as well. The users who will download the package should connect to a wireless network, because the file is very big, weighing 596.4MB. The users who weren’t notified yet that this update is available for their devices, they can manually check for OTA updates by going to Settings> About Phone> Software updates.

The Android 5.1 Lollipop was rolled out in March 2015 and the first devices that received it were Google’s Nexuses. This update brings also support for multiple SIM cards, HD voice and Device Protection, which is a measure of protection in case the device is lost or gets stolen, as it will be locked until signed-in using a Google account. The users can also join WiFi networks and pair their device with another one via Bluetooth, as this option can be found in Quick Settings.

For now, nobody knows when Android 6.0 Marshmallow will rollout to Sony’s Xperia M5 and Xperia M5 Dual, but other it seems that the Xperia Z5 users are already starting to receive this update. The latest Android version comes with new emojis with full support for Unicode 7.0 and 8.0 emojis, which will be used on the Keyboard application.
