Many flagships from various manufacturers are receiving the latest Android firmware and Sony is also pushing out the update to its most recent smartphones. Motorola doesn’t customize the stock UI like Samsung, while Sony is adding visual enhancements while staying true to the stock experience. The beta testers who own an Xperia Z3 or Z3 Compact device can now try out the Marshmallow Concept software, before the slightly changed Android UI will be available for the public.

Some users believe that extra elements added to the UI are causing devices to slow down, but this is not true, because a phone that is shipped with an untouched stock firmware can be buggy as well. And to give you an example, the Moto X Play had many bug issues, although Motorola hasn’t done anything to the user interface, while the Concept firmware introduced by Sony is getting more stable by the day.

According to reports, the Android 6.0 Marshmallow Concept can increase the battery life when working together with the Doze feature. Sony hasn’t included the Google Now Launcher, but the users can download it separately, but there are many elements that make the firmware look like Vanilla Android: the lock screen, notification share, on-screen keys, contacts app or phone dialer.

Sony has added other applications such as Camera app with AR effects, Album, Music app and the new launcher is similar to that of the to stock Android. Also, the Concept Marshmallow firmware has support for theme pack, grid-style menu etc.

The beta testers enrolled in the program to test out the Marshmallow Concept software will provide feedback on Sony’s official Google+ group, helping the developers to identify and fix bugs and to improve the stability and performance of the firmware. The devices accepted in the Concept program have been recently updated to Android 6.0.1 and in the upcoming months, this update will be officially released for those specific phones.

Anyway, the Xperia devices that have been approved to receive the Android Marshmallow update are: Xperia Z5 Premium, Z5 Compact, Z5, Z4 Tablet, Z3 Compact, Z3+, Z3, Z2, Xperia 2 Tablet, Xperia M5, M4, M4 Aqua, Xperia C5 Ultra and Xperia C4.
