Huawei GX8 was unveiled in the fall of 2015.

Based on the specs and features of this phone as well as its pricing, it is fair to say that it is a high-midlevel smartphone, just like the case of Motorola’s Moto X Play.

A few years ago the phablet term popped up, a term that was introduced to classify the large screen-sized phones that are not tablets. It seems another class of midrange smartphones that boast high-end specs has started popping up and one of the devices in this group happens to be the Huawei GX8 smartphone.

So, what about this phone?

Price and release date

Huawei unveiled the GX8 back in fall 2015 and pushed it to the shelves in the same year. The 32GB version is currently available at $350, and it comes in three color variants of silver, champagne, and metal (black).

Design quality and performance

Huawei is known for its premium designs, and it doesn’t disappoint as far as the GX8 is concerned. The phone looks a lot similar to the many high-end devices that come covered in metallic cases. It has an aluminum case that features two plastic strips on the rear, bottom as well as thetop. This helps prevent reception interference caused by the metal.

The 5.5 inches of display is protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 4 and has 2.5D edges. The fingerprint scanner is found at the back of the phone, and so does the rear snapper.

The GX8 sports an octa-core Snapdragon 616 chipset that is clocked at 1.2GHz on the lower end and 1.5GHz on the upper end. The phone also houses an Adreno 405 graphics unit and is supported by a RAM of 3GB.

Display quality and software

As mentioned above, the Huawei GX8 has a screen size of 5.5 inches with a Full HD LCD panel that manages a res power of 1920 by 1080 pixels. For this, you will get a decent pixel density of 401ppi. However, you might experience some reflections because of the 2.5D glass.

Huawei went for Android 5.1 Lollipop and just like all other Chinese models; you won’t find an app drawer on this device. If Lollipop is not your thing, don’t fret because Android Marshmallow update will be coming to this device very soon.

Huawei GX8’s USPs

If you thought the Huawei GX8 is just another mid-range smartphone from Huawei, you would be in for a surprise. The phone comes with quite a number of unique selling points; features that are rare to come by when dealing with this class of phones.

You will be surprised to learn that the GX8 has a fingerprint scanner, and it’s very easy to use. Other than the usual functions, the scanner can also be used as a touch button when answering calls, stopping alarms, capturing snaps or videos, among many other things.

It seems Huawei had the handicapped in mind when designing the GX8 thanks to the inclusion of the one-handed mode. With this mode, persons with one hand or any person who feels like using one hand to operate the phone while the other is busy with something else will have a much easier time using the GX8. The mode introduces a smaller window similar to the bigger one in the lower corners and from here; you can execute your tasks with ease.

Further, there is gesture control that allows users draw a multitude of patterns on the display screen and using these patterns, one can open apps without necessarily unlocking the screen.

Camera and battery unit

The camera is the GX8’s top feature. The phone comes with a 13MP snapper on the rear and a 5MP snapper on the front. The colors are better balanced and with the HDR mode available, be sure to get much better luminosity when capturing photos. You will come across a dual-LED flash as well as fast autofocus on this device.

With its huge screen size, the Huawei GX8 also comes with a decent battery unit of 3,000mAh. Even though it’s not the best battery unit around, you can be sure of getting, at least, a day and a half with moderated usage. You can also take advantage of the various energy saving modes the phone comes with in a bid to optimize the levels of battery consumption.
