Three months ago, Sony was announcing that the Z3 will be upgraded to Android Marshmallow, but the update still hasn’t arrived and it’s not known yet when this will happen. However, those who will wait a few more weeks will receive the official update, which it seems that it’s still in testing stage, but those who are not really interested in installing the firmware have an alternative: the crDroid custom ROM, which comes with the same features as the Android Marshmallow, plus other changes. It’s good to hear that at least the US bound Honor 5X will receive the Android Marshmallow OS, as Huawei already confirmed it.

Let’s start with the Xperia Z3, which was released in September 2014. The phone can be rooted and the users can install the crDroid custom ROM which offers additional features such as:

– AD Blocker
– SELinux switch
– SlimPie controls
– Ticker Notifications
– IME advanced settings
– Network traffic meter
– CAF task manager
– System apps remover option
– Lock app option on recent panel etc.

Don’t install the crDroid custom ROM on another smartphone, because you will brick it. Also, the Xperia Z3 smartphone must be rooted and its memory must be cleared, after backing up the most important data using tools such as Clockwork Mod (CWM) Recovery or TWRP.

All necessary USB drivers must be installed on the computer, or else the smartphone won’t be recognized and the battery must be around 80 percent, because otherwise, the device will shutdown during the installation and the Z3 will get bricked.

Steps To Install crDroid custom ROM

First, you will need to download the Android Marshmallow crDroid custom ROM and Google Apps to your computer, then connect the Z3 smartphone to it using a USB cord. The Android M custom firmware .zip file and Google Apps .zip file will be copied to your phone’s internal storage, then you will turn off your device and disconnect it from the computer.

Now, enter into Recovery Mode by pressing and holding the Volume Up, Home and Power buttons. Once you’ve entered into Recovery mode, you will choose wipe data/factory reset in order to clear the phone’s memory. Also, the cache memory will be cleared by selecting wipe cache partition.

Next, you will go back to the ClockworkMod recovery, where you will select Advanced and you will tap on wipe dalvik cache. Return to the main recovery screen and you will select to “install zip from SD card” and you will “choose zip from sdcard”, then go to your SD and access the Android Marshmallow ROM .zip file. You will start the installation process and after it completes, you will navigate to +++++Go Back+++++ and reboot your phone by selecting “reboot system now”. Wait until the phone will complete the booting process, then go to its Settings’ option and select “About phone”, in order to confirm the installation of the new Android Marshmallow crDroid custom ROM.

Honor 5X

Regarding Huawei’s US bound Honor 5X, the phone will be upgraded to Android 6.0 Marshmallow in the near future, according to a report from Android Authority, after the news has been confirmed by Huawei, The device will receive the latest custom UI layer, EMUI4, as well as regular Android security patches.
