Sharing is caring!

It is sometimes hard to believe that Facebook Messenger has more than 700 million monthly active users.

This is so because when the app first came out, many were not happy with the idea of separating the chat service from the main app, with a huge bunch the fact that they had to download another app something disgusting. Nonetheless, here we are and Messenger is in fact one of the most used chat apps in the world today.

If Messenger was to remain within the main Facebook app, we wouldn’t be talking of 5 cool things that you can do with this app. In fact, it would have been somewhat a problem to bundle these capabilities into the main social networking mobile app, but now that it’s a standalone app, there are quite a number of amazing stuff you can do with the app.

Sign up using a phone number

One of the newest additions to Facebook Messenger is the ability to sign up using a phone number. Unlike before where the only way to get into this chat app was using Facebook’s login credentials, those not on this social networking platform and would love to be part of the Messenger app can now do it easily. When signing up (after downloading the app from Google Play for the Android users and App Store for the iOS users), tap on the “Not on Facebook?” option and then provide your name, phone number and a profile photo.

Send your friend some money

Facebook Messenger now allows the users to send each other money from within the app. When in a conversation with a friend, just tap on the dollar sign at the lower end of the screen. Enter the amount you want your friend to receive and follow it with details of your debit card. Your friend will have to also add their debit card info in order to receive the money, which should take about three working days. Isn’t this cool?

Mute or leave a conversation

Notifications help the users know of any activities on the Facebook Messenger app. However, when conversations are too many, these notifications can become a nuisance. It is easy to mute them, better still; you can even go ahead and opt out of the conversations associated with these alerts.

It’s easy, just tap on the name at the top of the conversation and you will see a drop-down menu. Tap on the Notifications option and then go ahead and mute the notifications for any of the specified periods, which include muting them forever (until you decide to turn them back on).

You can also decide to leave a group conversation entirely and to do this, open the group and tap on the info icon at the top right corner. In the page that opens, tap on the menu option (three dots) at the top right corner and then select “Leave group”.

Chat over video

If you still complain about hefty charges on voice and video calls to overseas contacts, you must be living in the underworld! The internet has changed everything as far as communication is concerned and with Facebook Messenger being a dependent of the internet, it even makes it a lot more interesting.

With this app, it is possible to make free voice and video calls to the other users of the app. When in a conversation, simply tap on the phone or video icon located in the upper right hand corner and that’s it! In just a few seconds, you will be enjoying a HD-quality voice or video call with your friend from wherever s/he is.

Quick customer support

Facebook introduced Messenger Platform earlier this year. This is meant for business entities that want to take advantage of Facebook Messenger in keeping their customer base close to them through constant engagement.

There are business brands that already use this platform to offer customer support as well as a platform for easy access to information regarding different services or offerings by these companies. Companies such as Hyatt and Everlane are taking advantage of this capability, but many more are expected to come in. All you need to do is search for the name of the company; for instance, type “Hyatt” and it will pop up. Just tap on it and from there, you can have a one-on-one chat with the customer support team of these organizations.
