The Lumia 950 and 950 XL are Microsoft’s first flagships which came loaded with Windows 10, and thanks to this operating system’s new feature, Continuum, these phones can be connected to an external keyboard and screen and used as computers. In addition, both cameras have spectacular cameras, with great results, but the fans complained that the operating system still needs to be improved, because it lacks many applications. Anyway, here’s a short comparison between the Lumia 950 and 950 XL, which look like the 640 and 640 XL models.
Designs and Displays
Both phones have a polycarbonate shell and a metal frame, being available in two variants of colors, white and black, and featuring a large circular camera lens in the top center. The Lumia 950 weights 150grams and measures 145×73.2×8.2mm, while its screen has a diagonal of 5.2-inch and the supported resolution is 1440x2560pixels at 564ppi. The 950 XL phablet is 15 grams heavier, it measures 151.9×78.4×8.1mm and its screen is 0.5-inch larger, but the pixel density is lower at 518ppi. It’s worth mentioning that Microsoft has used Samsung’s AMOLED panel, which provides vibrant colors, oversaturated. Also, the screen is protected with Gorilla Glass 4 and the front camera at the top has a biometric face-scanning authentication feature, which allows the users to unlock their devices.
The smaller Lumia is powered by a Qualcomm MSM8992 Snapdragon 808 hexa core processor clocked at 1.82GHz, which is backed by an Adreno 418 GPU and 3GB of RAM, while the phablet has received the newer Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 octa core processor clocked at 2GHz, which is coupled with an Adreno 430 GPU and 3GB of RAM. Also, both devices have a microSD card slot for expanding the internal memory, which has a capacity of 16GB. With the card, the users can get up to 200GB of storage.
Cameras and Batteries
Their cameras are identical, with resolutions of 20MP and 5MP. The main one uses Carl Zeiss optics and PureView technology, and supports OIS, autofocus, triple-LED RGB flash, 1/2.4′ sensor size, 1.12µm pixel size and 4K video recording.
The Lumia 950 houses a good battery of 3000mAh, which provides 18 hours of talktime, with one hour less than the 3340mAh battery of the XL model. Also, both devices have integrated wireless charging and a HAAC audio recording subsystem.
Many fans have criticized Microsoft because of the small tiles which display less information on phones and ARM tablets, and they didn’t like the default calendar app, which shows only one appointment/day.
