The original Xiaomi Mi Pad 7.9 created a wave back in 2014. It has taken Xiaomi almost two years to come up with a new generation Mi Pad.

It has certainly been worth the wait since the latest generation Mi Pad 2 offers many new things that make it an even better value for money proposition.

There are a few aspects that are common to the two devices, and this starts with the 7.9-inch screen. This touchscreen is similar in all respects including the size and resolution. Mi Pad 2 does not fiddle with aspects that needed not much intervention. It is clear with the new generation device that the company is more than happy with the response it received for the display on the first generation.

Operating System

The biggest change – and one that could be seen in a number of other tablets – is the ability to run either the Windows 10 operating system or Android on the Mi Pad 2. The first-generation tablet only came with the Android 4.4 out of the box. However, the ability to choose an operating system is something that will catch on to other tablets given the popularity of Windows. This feature, though, is limited only to the 64 GB version.

To run the latest generation operating systems, Xiaomi ensures that the Mi Pad 2 remains capable regarding processors. The Intel Atom X5-Z8500 makes the Mi Pad 2 adequately powerful to run various tasks while it is supported by the Intel HD graphics. These form the bulk of the changes on the new Mi Pad 2. Despite possessing a similarly powerful quad-core processor, the first generation Mi Pad came with the Nvidia Tegra K1 and ULP GeForce Kepler GPU.

It is rather surprising to see that the Mi Pad 2 does not carry significant changes – or, in fact, any – in the camera department. The first-generation device came with an eight-megapixel rear camera that was sufficient two years ago. Tablets, however, have moved beyond this era, and the Mi Pad 2 continues with the same camera. It is the same story with the front camera, which employs a five-megapixel sensor. The new tablet is expected to be priced around $200 which will mean a great value for money proposition just like the original.
