Years ago, the older generation went to video rental stores to rent movies and prerecorded TV shows. Technology evolved fast and the owners of these stores gone bankrupt, because video streaming services went viral and people preferred to watch movies using the new method. Netflix and Amazon’s Prime Instant Video are the most popular services in the UK and there are many differences between them.

Netflix can be set up on Windows devices and Macs, on consoles such as PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, Wii, Blu-Ray players, myriad Smart TVs, Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, WD TV media player, mobile devices running on Android, iOS, and Windows Phone devices and YouView boxes.

Amazon Prime Instant Video works on computers and Macs via the web browser, on the same consoles, but only Smart TVs from Sony, Samsung, LG, and Hisense are compatible. Also, it’s compatible with Fire Phone, Fire Tablet, Kindles devices made by Amazon and it can be set up on Android and iOS mobile devices.

Here are the monthly plans for Netflix: Basic – £5.99 (£72 a year), Standard – £6.99 (£84 a year) and Premium – £8.99 (£108 a year). The content from the Basic plan (which doesn’t offer HD video) is included to the other two plans. However, the Standard plan offers HD content and the possibility to watch it on two screens, at the same time, while the Premium plan offers 4K video content, which can be watched on 4 screens, at the same time.

Amazon Prime Instant Video has an annual subscription of £79.99, but it offers only videos with a 1080p resolution and some old shows (before 2005) were shot in standard definition, so the quality is not that great. However, the service provides free One-Day Delivery on millions of items which can be bought from Amazon.

With Netflix, you have access to exclusive original TV series such as Daredevil, House of Cards, Orange Is The New Black, but the rest of TV series are not spectacular.

Amazon has original content – Amazon Originals – but the shows are not very popular worldwide. However, there are many Hollywood blockbusters and TV shows which are worth watching, such as Despicable Me, Mad Men, The Walking Dead, Arrow etc.
