The flagship phones from Samsung come with premium features but they are also heavily priced.
The J5 comes in the budget segment along with the J7 in the new J series. The phone offers decent specs and can comfortably compete with many other Chinese phones that come at affordable prices. The J5 is the younger sibling of the J series and offers good value for money.
Display and Design
The dimensions of the J5 are 142.1 x 71.8 x 7.9 mm and its weight is 146 grams. The J5 has a 5 inches screen, HD using the Super AMOLED technology, with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and a ppi of 294. It comes with two slots for the SIM and the microSD card, so storage is expandable. A matte finish has replaced the glossy plastic, and this offers good resistance to smudges and fingerprints. The size is compact, and it feels good to grip, with all the features being easily accessible. The AMOLED panel offers a pleasant experience while viewing movies or playing a game.
Hardware and Connectivity
A quad-core, Snapdragon, 410 CPU clocking at 1.2 GHz, powers the J5, and it is combined with a RAM of 2 GB. However, the internal storage is only 8 GB, though it can be expanded to a maximum of 128 GB using the microSD card. As for connectivity, both the SIM card slots can support 4G, LTE, in addition to which there are the usual Bluetooth and Wi-Fi as well as GPS connectivity.
The operating system is Android 5.1.1, Lollipop, over which the company’s proprietary TouchWiz user interface is used as skin. TouchWiz has thankfully been refined, both regarding its design and its usability.
In addition to the S Voice, the J5 also comes with the Smart Manager tool, which checks out the statistics related to performance, for instance, the status of the battery, the storage space, and amount of memory that the applications use and so on. You can also use it for closing an application and run an antivirus check. All this makes the theme engine very powerful.
The Snapdragon, 410 chip has been combined with a RAM of 2 GB, and this offers a decent performance level, capable of efficient multitasking and running of apps.
The rear camera has a resolution of 13 MP with an aperture of f/1.9, capable of absorbing a good deal of light and offering bright pictures. The pictures are equally good in low light conditions as well. It has a powerful LED flash, which is present for both the cameras. The front shooter has a resolution of 5 MP and is capable of taking decent shots for selfies. The camera can be quickly opened using the double press feature on its home button. The user interface offers several modes, such as Auto, Sound and Shot, Continuous Shot as well as Beauty Face and Panorama, not mention the Pro mode as well.
It comes with a 2600 mAh battery and has the advantage of being a portable one.
All in all, there seem to be a lot of good features in the J5, with the Super AMOLED technology, the 4G connectivity, the storage expandability, the LED flash and last but not least, the much enhanced TouchWiz.
