2015 wasn’t a rich year in releases, but the phones that hit the market became popular quite fast and everyone started talking about them. Google brought LG back to the table, hoping to have the same success with the new Nexus 5X, after the 2013 model was considered one of the best affordable devices. Samsung reinvented its design style, starting with the Galaxy S6, which ditched the perforated back in favor of a glass and metal design. But, in parallel, the South Korean company worked on a new line of metal-clad smartphones and in this article we’ll focus on the Galaxy A9 phablet.

Designs and Displays

The back of the Nexus 5X contains a protruding circular camera in the top center (with the dual-LED flash in front of it), below it is placed the fingerprint scanner and much lower is the nexus logo, written on the vertical. The Nexus 5X is made of matte plastic and it comes in three colors: Carbon, Quartz and Ice, while its dimensions are 147×72.6×7.9mm. The device doesn’t feel uncomfortable to hold in your hand, as it has an average weight of 136 grams. You will be able to operate on the screen with one hand, because it’s not very large, featuring a diagonal of 5.2-inch. The previous model came with a 5-inch screen and a Full HD resolution, which was used on the Nexus 5X as well, but the pixel density has been decreased to 424ppi.

The Galaxy A9 features a uni-body aluminum back available in Pearl White, Midnight Black, Champagne Gold colors, but Samsung hasn’t confirmed yet which type of protection will be used for the 5.5-inch Super AMOLED screen which will support a resolution of 1080×1920 pixels at 401ppi. Neither the dimensions of this phablet have been specified, but from the images we’ve seen on the internet, the device will have a rectangular body with rounded corners and the edges are slightly curved.

Even if it’s not as powerful as other smartphones, the Nexus 5X has better specs than the Galaxy A9. Its hardware combination consists of a Qualcomm MSM8992 Snapdragon 808 chipset which is powered by a quad-core 1.44 GHz Cortex-A53 CPU and a dual-core 1.82 GHz Cortex-A57 CPU and it supports Adreno 418 graphics and 2GB of RAM. Its internal memory comes in variants of 16GB and 32GB, but they can’t be expanded, so you’re stuck with them.

The Galaxy A9 has a weaker Qualcomm MSM8976 Snapdragon 620 octa core processor formed from a quad-core 1.8 GHz Cortex-A72 CPU and a quad-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A53 CPU. But the graphics are the latest Adreno 510, which will allow you to play the most complex games. Also, the processor is backed by 3GB of RAM and you’ll store enough files on the internal memory card, whose capacity can be increased from 32GB up to 128GB.

Cameras and Batteries

The Nexus 5X uses a 12.3 MP Sony sensor on the back which supports laser autofocus, dual-LED (dual tone) flash and 1.55µm pixel size, being capable to record 2160p videos @30fps. The front camera has the same resolution as that of the Galaxy A9, 5MP, and it records Full HD videos. The main camera of the Samsung phablet has a resolution of 16MP, but it doesn’t come with a bunch of features, as the list includes only autofocus, LED flash and HDR.

The Nexus 5X costs $370 and it’s powered by a 2700mAh battery which supports fast charging via the USB Type-C port. It’s not known yet how big will be the battery of the Galaxy A9, but without a doubt, it will be non-removable. As for the price, it will be $500.
