The 2013 Apple TV set-top box needed a successor and the fans were anxious to see it released, but they had two wait two years until Apple made the move. But the waiting paid off, because this streamer brought an app store, a remote control with a touchpad and Siri integration etc, so, what other changes did the Apple TV 2015 bring?
Theoretically, the 2015 model has the same design as its predecessor, looking like a black box with curved corners, but it’s 10mm taller, measuring now 33mm, while the length and width measure also 98x98mm. Because the device has gained a few mm, the Apple TV is heavier, as now it weights 425grams, with 153grams more than the 2013 model. The device has only a status light on its front side and on the back side are found the following ports: power in, HDMI 1.43 out, Ethernet and USB-C. The 2013 model comes with power in, HDMI out, optical audio out, Ethernet and Micro-USB socket.
The remote of the new Apple TV has a touchpad and Siri integration, which means that it comes with dual-mics for voice commands. Also, it includes sensors which detect motion just like Nintendo’s Wii console, but it’s not an IR sensor. Also, you don’t have to worry about the Lightning connector, because after you charge it, it lasts up to three months, the new remote comes with a few buttons for menu, display, Siri, play/pause and volume and it can be used as a game controller when you’re turning it sideways. The Apple TV 2013 has an aluminum remote which controls it, but it can be controlled also via the Remote for iOS app.
Hardware And AV Output
The old model came with an internal memory of 8GB and it was powered by a 32bit A5 processor which was backed by 512 MB of RAM, and the chipset was manufactured by Samsung, being introduced on the iPad 2. The Apple TV 2015 has two variants of internal memories: 32GB and 64GB and the device is powered by a 64bit A8 processor, which supports 2GB of RAM.
The Apple TV 2015 disappointed the fans because it doesn’t support 4K video content, only H.264 video up to 1080p at 60fps. The previous model streams H.264 video in 1080p at 30fps.
Connectivity and OS
The 2015 model supports 802.11ac WiFi with MIMO and Bluetooth 4.0, while the previous model came with WiFi (802.11a/b/g/n) support. The Apple TV 2015 runs on a new operating system called tvOS and the users are able to download TV content from the app store.
