Most of the major players have started creating a miniature version of the flagship version and the Xperia Z3 Compact falls in this category.
However, in most cases, the petite versions have the same design and brand of their elder or bigger siblings, but the hardware specs are never the same. Sony is refreshingly different in this aspect and has managed to keep all the high-end specs even in its compact Z3 model. All the flagship features have been packed in a 4.6 inches body.
The Z3C or Compact has very common design features, but the devil lies in its details. The glass panels, the metal detailing and other aspects of the design remind that you are holding a premium device. Everything has been assembled with great precision and it qualifies for IP65/68, being waterproof as well as dustproof. A Krait 400, quad core processor powers the phone, clocking at a speed of 2.5 GHz and a graphics card, Adreno 330. It comes with a RAM of 2 GB.
The battery has a power of 2600 mAh and is non removable. The internal storage is 16 GB, with 12 GB of free space available. In addition, you can use a microSDXC card and get additional storage up to 128 GB. The OS is Android 4.4.4, layered with a Sony specific, proprietary user interface. The skin is light and it is not much different from the pure stock Android. It is intuitive and works well, so if you are familiar with Android, you don’t even need a tutorial and can just dive in to the features.
The rear camera has an amazing resolution of 20.7 MP with a 1/2.3 inches sensor, whereas the front camera has a resolution of 2.2 MP, with 1080 pixels for video and 4K features.
The dimensions of the Z3C are 127 x 64.9 x 8.6 mm and the weight is 129 grams. The screen size is 4.6 inches and the resolution is 1280 x 720 pixels. The Triluminos LCD technology has been used for the screen.
The battery life is outstanding and the performance is excellent. The design is a flagship equal and the build quality leaves nothing to be desired. Though the phone is smaller in size, when compared to other large flagship phones, the capabilities are not small
Though the camera is good in normal conditions, the low light performance is not so good. In addition, Sony’s skin on Android feels old.
The Z3 can very well be acclaimed as the best Android mobile device in the small category. All the features that one would expect in a flagship phone are present. The features are packed in a compact package. The device is well built, though the rectangular shape may not be appealing to everyone. It is elegant and the camera is great in favorable conditions. The battery life is literally endless and the price is reasonable. It goes to prove that merely because a phone is a small flagship, it need not be less than a flagship in any aspect.
