The Samsung Galaxy A8 and the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact were released as medium budget smartphones in July 2015 and September 2014 respectively.

Although both devices use the nano SIM, the Galaxy A8 accommodates two SIM cards at a time as against the Xperia Z3 Compact, which is a single SIM gadget. The A8 is available in color options of gold, gray and white. On the other hand, the Z3 Compact presents itself in more flashy colors of black, orange, white and green. While some features are the same in the two handsets, there are differences too like the type of speakers used. The Samsung smartphone incorporates a loudspeaker in place of the stereo speakers in the Sony smartphone.

Dimensions, Weight and Body Material

The Samsung Galaxy A8 comes in a size of 158 x 76.8 x 5.9 mm compared to the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact that comes in a dimension of 127 x 64.9 x 8.6 mm. In other words, the Galaxy A8 and the Xperia Z3 Compact are categorized under the big size and medium size smartphones respectively. While the A8 weighs 151g, the Z3 Compact is about 130g. The two gadgets have similar body design with glass chasses and metal accents.

One unique aspect of the Sony smartphone is that it is IP 68 certified, which makes it both dust and water resistant.

Verdict: There is no doubt that the Sony offering emerges the winner. With a compact size and not as bulky as its Samsung counterpart, it is definitely easy to hold in your hand without tiring. It also fits more easily into the pocket. Added to this, the dust and water resistance aspects ensure that your gadget is rugged and better capable of withstanding minor accidents.

Screen Display, Pixel and Resolution

The Galaxy A8 sports a 5.7-inch screen with Super AMOLED display and the Xperia Z3 Compact is equipped with a 4.-inch IPS LCD screen. The A8 has a dense pixel resolution of 1080 x 1920 and a pixel density of 386ppi. However, the Xperia Z3 Compact screen has 720 x 1080 pixel resolution and 319ppi pixel density. It is to be noted that the A8 has a Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protective layer on its screen. This is something that the Z3 Compact lacks. But what is unique to this smartphone is its X-Reality Engine. However, both of them support multi-touch and generate 16 million colors.

Verdict: Pictures are sharper and clearer in the Samsung Galaxy A8 owing to the better pixel resolution and pixel density. Also, the Super AMOLED technology has proved itself to be capable of rendering brighter images and wider viewing angles, as well as reduced power consumption. Additionally in this case, colors are more accurately reproduced than the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. The protection layer also safeguards the screen against scratches.

The Galaxy A8 has a 16MP rear camera with 5312 x 2988 resolution whilst the Xperia Z3 Compact showcases a 5248 x 3936 resolution 20MP camera. Both cameras incorporate LED flash and support the autofocus feature. Although there are many other similar functionalities as well, they show disparities too. For example, the A8 camera allows voice activation. But for digital image stabilization, you need the Z3 Compact camera. The Samsung camcorder records 1080p HD videos in contrast to the Sony camcorder that can record 4K, 1080p HD and 720p HD videos. Talking of the secondary front snapper, the Samsung Galaxy A8 comprises a 5MP camera when evaluated against the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact.

Verdict: The Xperia Z3 Compact camera will definitely not let you down in terms of crispness and clarity when it comes to capturing your favorite video or photo. But for conference calls, video chats and selfies; the Galaxy A8 will serve your needs better.

Hardware, Software and Memory

Housing Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets and 2GB RAM, the A8 uses a 1.5GHz octa core processor and an Adreno 405 processor. The Z3 Compact has a 2.5GHz quad core processor and an Adreno 330 processor. The Samsung smartphone comes with 32GB ROM internal storage and the equivalent storage space in the Sony smartphone is 16GB ROM. This ROM can be enhanced in both the smartphones up to 128GB. The Samsung Galaxy A8 comes with the latest Android – Lollipop – installed. The operating system in the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is Android KitKat that can be upgraded to Lollipop.

Verdict: With an octa core processor, performance is bound to be faster in the Galaxy A8. Also, the excess storage and installation of the latest version of the operating system makes it a preferred device.
