After releasing the One M9 flagship, HTC brought a variety of devices with a similar design. Some of them came with a fingerprint scanner, others with more advanced cameras, but they look mostly the same. So, we’ll focus on the minor differences that you should know about, in order to understand which phone has better specs.

Designs and Displays

Compared to the One M9, the A9 is slimmer, a bit taller and lighter, measuring 145.8×70.8×7.3mm, while it weights 143grams, and it has a unibody metal design available in colors of Carbon Gray, Opal Silver, Topaz Gold and Deep Garnet. The phone comes with a fingerprint scanner and you’ll find it hidden inside the oval home button.

The One M9 weights 14grams more, it measures 144.6×69.7×9.6mm and it has a dual-tone design, meaning that some of its variants have a different color for the frame and back, such as Silver/Rose gold and Gold/Pink, but the other models are “normal” and available in colors of Gunmetal Gray, Amber Gold and Pink. This phone has a rear camera with a large square lens, while the A9 has its rear camera located above the stripe at the top and it has a small circular lens.

Both phones have screens measuring 5-inch and they support a Full HD resolution of 1080x1920pixels at 441ppi, but the One M9 uses a Super LCD3 panel, while the A9 received an AMOLED display from Samsung and it produces more saturated colors.

The winner of this section is the One M9, because this model is a premium one and benefits from a more powerful processor, which is the latest Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 octa core (quad-core 1.5GHz Cortex-A53 and quad-core 2GHz Cortex-A57), but it’s the first version which made its debut at the beginning of this year and it brought some controversial overheating issues. However, HTC placed 3GB of RAM on the chipset and the internal memory is expandable from 32GB up to 128GB.

The One A9 uses the much weaker Qualcomm MSM8952 Snapdragon 617 octa core processor (quad-core 1.5GHz Cortex-A53 and quad-core 1.2GHz Cortex-A53) which is backed by either 2GB of RAM (with 16GB of storage) or 3GB of RAM (with 32GB of storage). The interesting part is the maximum expandable memory size, which is 200GB. According to tests, the A9 is more power efficient, but the M9 has a more powerful chipset which supports more graphically intensive tasks.

The battery inside the A9 is only 2150mAh, and the disadvantage is that you can’t replace it when its life starts decreasing. The M9 comes with a 2840mAh battery which should last around 22 hours, with 6 hours more than the other model.

Both devices have a front camera of 4MP (UltraPixel) for selfies, but the One M9 has a rear camera of 20MP with an aperture of F/2.2 and UHD 4K video recording, while the A9 sports a 13MP back camera with an F/2.0 aperture (a better low-light performer), OIS and Full HD video recording.
