Both of these high-end smartphones will be available in stores in November and they will run on two different platforms: the Lumia 950 XL will come loaded with Windows 10, while the Xperia Z5 Premium will be shipped with Android OS, v5.1.1 (Lollipop), then it will be upgraded to v6.0 (Marshmallow). These devices are very different from each other and they have their own advantages and disadvantages, so it’s up to you to decide which model fits you better.
Designs and Displays
The Lumia 950 XL has a plastic back and a metal frame around the sides. It’s a pretty device, but there’s nothing special about its design. You’ll see that there’s a large circular camera lens which supports a triple-LED flash, but the device lacks any protection against dust and water, likewise the Xperia Z5 Premium. Its screen is larger and it uses Samsung’s AMOLED technology, which makes the colors appear more vibrant. As for the resolution, it’s QHD and it gives a pixel density of 518ppi, because the diagonal measures 5.7-inch. This means that the body is pretty large, measuring 151.9×78.4×8.1mm, while the body weights 165grams.
The Xperia Z5 Premium has glass on its rear panel and it’s available in three colors: Chrome, Black and Gold, but the surface is a bit slippery and easy to crack. Anyway, the device looks a lot more premium, and it’s a bit slimmer (7.8mm compared to 8.1mm) and its screen measures 5.5-inch, being an IPS LCD with a much higher resolution of 2160x3840pixels, which gives an enormous pixel density of 806ppi.
Both flagships are equally fast, because they share the same hardware configuration. They’re powered by a Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 octa core processor with four Cortex-A53 cores running at 1.5GHz and four Cortex-A57 cores running at 2GHz. The processor is backed by Adreno 430 graphics and 3GB of RAM and both devices support an internal memory of 32GB, which can be expanded up to 200GB.
Cameras and Batteries
Each device stands out with its pair of cameras, because they have high resolutions and nice features that contribute to the improvement of the image quality. So, the Lumia 950 XL is fitted with a 20MP PureView camera with Carl Zeiss optics and it supports OIS, autofocus, a triple-LED RGB flash, 1/2.4′ sensor size, 1.12 µm pixel size and 4K recording. As for the secondary camera, it’s 5MP.
The Xperia Z5 Premium has a 23MP main camera with phase detection autofocus and LED flash, being also capable of shooting 4K videos, while the front camera supports 5.1MP.
Also, the Xperia Z5 Premium houses a larger 3430 mAh battery, which outperforms the 3340 mAh battery of the Lumia 950 XL, but both units support quick charging.
