Two years have passed since LG delighted us with the Nexus 5 device for Google and many fans were disappointed when they heard that Motorola will make the next Nexus device in 2014. The disappointment was bigger when they’ve actually seen the phablet, because it was too large and too similar to the Moto X 2014, so they preferred to wait until LG will be back with a dream phone. Well, this happened and we have a new Nexus 5X phone at a price of $399, which is the alternative to the Nexus 6P phablet created by Huawei.
Designs and Displays
The Nexus 5 had a plastic body with a floating arc shape (curved top and bottom edges), which was available in three colors: white, black and red. It had the rear camera positioned in the upper left corner and had a large black lens with the LED flash under it, the dimensions of the phone were 138x69x8.6mm and it weighted 130grams, which was a reasonable weight for a phone with its sizes. The screen was a True HD IPS+ with a diagonal that measured almost 5-inch, and the resolution was 1080×1920 pixels at 445ppi.
The Nexus 5X is skinnier, having a thickness of 7.9mm, but its body has now a rectangular shape and the plastic material on its back is available in colors of Carbon, Quartz and Ice, but it’s larger, measuring 147x73x7.9mm and it’s 6grams heavier. The rear camera was moved to the top center and below it you’ll see the circular fingerprint scanner. The screen size has been increased to 5.2-inch, but the resolution has been kept and the pixel density has been decreased to 424ppi, the new model has now a speedier USB-C (fast charging).
The Nexus 5X comes loaded with Android 6.0 Lollipop, but this OS will run on the Nexus 5 as well, Google’s new operating system has lots of improvements and new features such as support for fingerprint scanners, Android on Tap, a new app permission system etc.
The Nexus 5, which came with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.3GHz quad-core processor backed by 2GB RAM, scored 19,379 in the Antutu benchmark, while the Nexus 5X scored of 1000 in single-core tests and 2919 in multi-core tests with its Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 hexa-core (two cores clocked at 1.8GHz and four cores clocked at 1.4GHz cores) processor, which is paired with 2GB of RAM
The internal memory is available in the same two variants of 16 and 32GB, but neither this time LG didn’t add a microSD card slot for expansion.
Cameras and Batteries
The Nexus 5 doesn’t have amazing cameras and their resolutions are only 8MP and 1.3MP and the good news is that one of the features is OIS, which is now found on many flagships. LG increased the resolutions of both sensors, so now we have a 12.3MP back camera with autofocus, dual-LED (dual tone) flash, 1.55µm pixel size and 4K video capture, while the secondary camera is 5MP.
The Nexus 5 had a battery of 2,300mAh, which offered 17 hours of talking time on 3G, but the Nexus 5X has now a 2,700mAh battery that charges five times faster and with the new feature called Doze, the standby battery life is now better.
