The world has undergone numerous technological revolutions, which enable users to access their files from anywhere on the Earth using tools such as OneDrive, Google Drive and Dropbox to mention a few.
However, there are times when you need to access the desktop and not a few files. Which tool can you use to access the desktop remotely? Google Chrome is the answer. You can do this through its remote desktop, which is a browser extension.
How should you use Google Chrome to access your computer remotely?
Prepare the Remote Desktop
First, prepare the Remote desktop. Do this by installing Google Chrome on all the computers that you intend to access remotely. Do not forget to install Remote Desktop extension on the same computers as well. After installing the browser and the extension, the next step requires moving to the bookmarks bar on Chrome and clicking the button labeled Apps. Finish by clicking Chrome Remote Desktop on the tab that you open under Apps.
Enable Extended Access Permissions
Next, you will receive a prompt asking you to click Continue and provide “extended access permissions” to the browser extension to all your PCs. Follow the prompts until you conclude this process. After that, you will notice two options as shown below:
- Access Your Computers
- Connect to a Computer to provide remote assistance
Protect Each Remote Computer with a PIN
Under “My Computers” tap the button marked Get Started. This step will provide you with a list of all the computers under your account. For first time users, only one PC will appear – the one that you are currently using. First timers should be able to see a button marked “Enable remote connections”, which they must agree to as it holds the key regarding accessing the computer remotely. Remember that all PCs within this arrangement need special PINs.
Every time you want to access your computer remotely, open the browser extension, click on the appropriate machine then enter the relevant PIN within the pop-up window that appears afterwards. You are free to command Chrome Remote Desktop never to prompt you for a PIN in future although this is dangerous as it could provide anybody who finds the computer you use for accessing the other machines remotely with the opportunity to do just that and cause mayhem.
Finally, it is good to know that you can access your computers remotely through an Android device. The process is similar to what you need to do regarding Chrome Remote Desktop, as mentioned above. The only difference is that you can find the app from Google Play Store before downloading and installing it. The Chrome Remote Desktop will not provide you with a much bigger view of the screen.
