WhatsApp is insanely popular, boasting a monthly active user base of over 900 million people who exchange close to 70 billion messages in a day.
The app allows for the exchange of text, video, voice and picture messages over the internet. In essence, users will send the messages for free as long as they are connected to a Wi-Fi connection. In addition to sending messages, it is also possible to make free voice calls over the same internet connection to others users of the app. Last year, Facebook cashed out $19 billion to acquire this messaging app and since then, lots of changes have been implemented on the application, among them the introduction of the free WhatsApp calling service.
Another introduction that has been made possible by Facebook is the ability to use the app on other devices other than mobile phones, for instance, desktops, laptops and tablets, via a web client known as WhatsApp Web. However, this application comes with its own limitations; among them the inability to make free voice calls. If you want to have the same functionality of WhatsApp for mobile phones on your tablet, there is a much better way of getting things done, but there is a trade-off.
WhatsApp Web syncs your smartphone to your tablet, which means that you will be able to use both devices at the same time. However, with our method, a new account will be created on the tablet and thus terminating the mobile account. Here is how to do it.
Download WhatsApp APK
The first thing to do is download the latest version of WhatsApp APK from the official website. This is needed because there is no WhatsApp download available for Android tablets via the Google Play Store. However, since you are on an Android device, you will need to make some tweaks to your device’s settings before proceeding with the installation of the APK.
Head over to the Security settings of your tablet and check the “Unknown sources” option, which basically allows installation of apps on the device from sites other than the Play Store.
Install a text messaging application
Once you get the settings ready, you still need to download a text messaging application and install it on the same tablet, for instance, TextPlus. This app will help you send and receive messages on your tablet. Launch the newly installed messaging app and head to the settings. Key in your phone number and other contact information to sign up for the service and then head back to the WhatsApp APK you downloaded earlier. Tap on it to start installation.
When the app is done with installation, fire it up and the first screen you see will ask for your phone number. Key in the same number you provided for the installed text messaging app and go on with verification.
You are now good to go. WhatsApp will scan through your saved phonebook to determine the contacts that are using the service on their devices as well. With this version, you will be able to do everything that the smartphone version does.
